The beginning of Nandanvan Zoo

The story of Nandanvan goes back to 1979, when the Nandanvan Mini Zoo was first established on the banks of the Kharun river, Hatband in Raipur. At that time, Chhattisgarh was still part of undivided Madhya Pradesh, and the initiative came from the State Forest Department to create a green refuge for wildlife conservation and public recreation near the city. Senior forest officers and local leaders of Raipur played a key role in its establishment.

The title of “mini zoo” was granted by the Central Zoo Authority in 2008. The old zoo was modest in scale compared to today’s safari, but it quickly became one of the most popular attractions for people in Raipur and nearby. Spread across a few dozen acres, it housed a variety of mammals, birds, and reptiles – including leopards, jackals, crocodiles, spotted deer, and several species of local birds. For many people of that generation, Nandanvan was their first introduction to wild animals outside of textbooks.

Over time, the zoo faced limitations of space and urban growth around Raipur, which made further expansion difficult. This constraint became a major reason why the State Government, decades later, decided to shift the concept to a much larger landscape at Nava Raipur, giving rise to the present-day Nandanvan Jungle Safari.

How Nandanvan Safari & Zoo Came to Be?

Inauguration of Nandanvan Safari

In November 2000, after the creation of Chhattisgarh, the state government formalized plans for development of a new capital city, Nava Raipur. By early 2008, the old Nandanvan Mini Zoo in Raipur had become too small for its growing animal collection and the rising number of visitors.

The NRDA (Naya Raipur Development Authority), under the ingenious vision of the former honourable Chief Minister Dr. Raman Singh conducted a meeting on 21.01.2011 to develop a world class zoo & safari in Nava Raipur - under the chairmanship of chief secretary which PCCF Wildlife and APCCF (CAMPA) attended.

The Government of Chhattisgarh envisioned Nava Raipur not only as a new capital city, but also as a hub of modern institutions and eco-tourism. The idea was to establish a world-class Zoo & Safari spread across thousands of acres — something far larger and more natural than the mini zoo.

The project took shape in phases, and the Safari was finally inaugurated on 1 November 2016 by the honourable Prime Minister Narendra Modi, followed by the Zoo section’s inauguration on 6 October 2019 by the former honourable Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel.

Why Were Animals Shifted to Nava Raipur Zoo?

Space & Habitat

Space & Habitat

The old Raipur zoo was landlocked and could not expand due to urban growth, whereas the Nava Raipur site provided ~800 acres for free-range safari zones, enclosures, and natural landscaping.

Animal Welfare

Animal Welfare

Modern zoo guidelines (from the CZA) require larger, species-appropriate enclosures and enriched environments. Moving to the new facility allowed the animals to live in more natural habitats.

Visitor Experience & Education

Visitor Experience & Education

The new site could combine open safari rides with traditional zoo sections, offering both excitement and conservation education — something not possible at the cramped old site.
